Smast: a village by the Soča, 10 minutes from Kobarid

Smast is a small village on the left bank of the Soča, between Kobarid and Tolmin. The shops, restaurants and museum are in Kobarid, the Krn trails start in Drežnica and at Planina Kuhinja, and the river runs below the village.

A longer bar means a longer drive. In winter and in heavy summer traffic, allow a few minutes more.

What to do

River, a waterfall, mountains and history

  • The Soča at the Napoleon Bridge

    Below the bridge the river has cut a narrow gorge. A path runs along the water towards the Kozjak waterfall and Kobarid.

  • Kozjak waterfall

    The waterfall drops into a rock chamber above the Soča. It is a short walk on a forest path from the car park.

  • Kobarid Museum

    A museum about the Soča (Isonzo) Front of the First World War, in the centre of Kobarid. A good choice for a rainy day.

  • Krn

    The mountain above Kobarid (2,244 m), with Lake Krn below the summit. Trails start in Drežnica and at Planina Kuhinja.

  • On the water

    Rafting, kayaking and canyoning are mostly run from Bovec and around Kobarid. Fishing on the Soča needs a permit.

  • Cycling and walks

    Roads and tracks along the valley are good for cycling, and from the village you can walk out on the nearby paths and farm tracks.

How to get to us

By car

From Ljubljana just under two hours, via Tolmin. From Austria over the Predel Pass and Bovec, in summer also over the Vršič Pass. From Italy via Cividale and the Robič border crossing. Address for your sat nav: Smast 28, 5222 Kobarid.

By plane

Trieste Airport is about 1 hour 15 minutes' drive from the house, Ljubljana Airport about 1 hour 35 minutes. You will need a car from the airport.

Parking

Parking by the house is free and does not need booking. Please let us know your arrival time in advance.
